What Makes a Great Business Name
Great names almost always share the same DNA. There are five characteristics I look for when evaluating whether a business name is actually good, or just fine. Let’s break them down:

Memorable
If people can’t remember your brand name, they can’t talk, share or Google it.
Simple, rhythmic, or slightly unexpected names tend to stick. A few examples would be Airbnb, Etsy, or Zoom, all of which are short, snappy, easy to say out loud.
A quick test I usually do to check the name is memorable or not is to say the name once, and see if I can recall it 10 minutes later. If I can’t, it’s not memorable enough.
Relevant
Your name should give people a hint about what you do or what you stand for. It doesn’t have to be literal though. Making people feel right for the brand’s category would be sufficient.
For example, Spotify doesn’t immediately tell people it’s a music platform, but this still feel right for the brand’s category.
Unique
The internet is flooded with names that are too similar. Try to avoid picking a name that people already connect to other brand, even if it’s not exactly the same on paper.
A unique name doesn’t have to be weird; it just has to be distinct. For example, Glossier stands out among a sea of beauty brands because it’s elegant yet modern, familiar yet fresh.
Scalable
Your name should grow with your business. Pick something flexible that still works if your business evolves. You want a name that can live comfortably on packaging, ads, and a global domain.
Available
There’s no point picking names only to discover that you could not use it due to website domain being taken, or someone already holds the trademark. It’s a dead end.
To avoid this, simply check for trademarks, domain availability and do a quick social search. I will have a more detailed guidance later in this post.
How to Name Your Business: Step by Step
Step 1: Define Your Brand Personality
Before you can name your business, you need to understand what it stands for. This foundational step is all about clarity and purpose.
- Determine your mission and values: What is your business’s core purpose? What problem are you solving for your customers? What are the principles that guide your work?
- Identify your target audience: Who are you trying to reach? What kind of language and tone will resonate with them? A name for a luxury brand will be very different from a name for a budget-friendly service.
- Analyze your competitors: What are your competitors’ names like? Are they descriptive, creative, or based on the founder’s name? Your name should help you stand out and differentiate your business, not blend in.
Step 2: Brainstorm Name Ideas
This is the creative part of the process. The goal is to generate as many ideas as possible & narrow down to a single final choice.
You can use 6 ways to name your business we’ve mentioned above, browse our business name list by industries, or utilize AI & Online name Generator.
Step 3: Screen and Shortlist Your Names
Once you have a long list of potential names, it’s time to narrow them down.
- Say them out loud: How do the names sound? Are they easy to pronounce? Names that are difficult to say will be difficult to remember.
- Check for negative connotations: Research the name for any unintended meanings in different languages or cultural contexts. An innocent-sounding name in one culture could be offensive in another.
- Assess memorability and uniqueness: Does the name stand out? Will it be easy for customers to remember and spell?
Step 4: Conduct a Legal and Availability Check
This is the most critical and often overlooked step. Skipping this can lead to costly rebranding and legal issues.
- Search for trademark availability: Use the official trademark database (like the USPTO in the U.S.) to check if your top name choices are already trademarked by another business, especially in a similar industry. A common name may be available for a law firm but not for a coffee shop.
- Check business name registration: Search your state’s or country’s business registry to see if a similar legal entity name is already in use. This protects you from having to change your name on legal documents.
- Check domain name and social media handles: In today’s digital world, it’s crucial to find a matching
.comdomain and social media handles. Use domain registrars and social media platforms to see what is available. If your preferred domain is taken, consider variations (e.g., adding a word, using a different extension like.coor.io).
Step 5: Get Feedback and Test Your Name
Don’t rely solely on your own opinion. Get outside perspectives to ensure your name resonates with your target audience.
- Ask your target audience: Share your top 2-3 names with potential customers and ask for their honest feedback. Do they understand what the business is about? What are their initial impressions?
- Test for usability: Is the name easy to say and write down? Does it look good in a logo? Can it be used effectively in marketing materials and a website URL?
Step 6: Finalize and Register Your Name
Once you have a name that passes all the previous checks, it’s time to make it official.
- File with the government: Register your business name with the appropriate government agency (e.g., Secretary of State, local county office). This makes your business name legally recognized.
- Secure your digital presence: Purchase the domain name and reserve the corresponding social media handles to ensure no one else can use them.
- Begin your brand identity: With your name secured, you can now move on to creating your logo, branding, and marketing materials with confidence.
10 Ways to Name a Business
By this point, you probably have a few ideas swirling in your head — but maybe none of them feel right yet. Don’t worry, that’s normal. If you still haven’t found a name after checking my list, then maybe the best approch is to come up with a name by yourself!
Here are several proven ways to name your business, each with real examples, pros and cons
| Naming Style | Definition | Pros | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descriptive | Clearly says what you do or sell. | ✅ Instantly clear, helps SEO, builds trust. ❌ Can sound generic or limit future growth. | General Motors, Hotels.com, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf |
| Invented Word | Create a completely new term or sound. | ✅ 100% ownable, easy to trademark, stands out. ❌ Needs marketing to build meaning, sometimes hard to spell. | Kodak, Spotify, Xerox |
| Merged Words | Blend two simple words into one. | ✅ Memorable, modern, flexible. ❌ Many combos already taken, can sound forced. | Facebook, Netflix, QuickBooks |
| Metaphor | Uses imagery or symbolism to express your essence. | ✅ Evokes emotion, timeless, distinctive. ❌ Might confuse at first glance. | Amazon, Nike, Red Bull |
| Founder Name | Uses your name or a partner’s name. | ✅ Builds authenticity and trust. ❌ Hard to sell later, not descriptive. | Ford, Chanel, Ben & Jerry’s |
| Geographic-based | References your city, country, or region. | ✅ Adds authenticity, relatable, local SEO boost. ❌ Limits scalability, rebranding is tough. | Brooklyn Brewery, California Pizza Kitchen, IKEA |
| Acronyms | Shorten a long name into an abbreviation. | ✅ Clean, minimal, familiar. ❌ Meaning can get lost, less emotional. | IBM, KFC, H&M |
| Value or Emotion | Expresses what your brand stands for or makes people feel. | ✅ Emotionally resonant, memorable. ❌ Can be vague without context. | Kind, Rise, Thrive Market |
| Foreign Language Flair | Uses words from other languages. | ✅ Sophisticated, intriguing, distinct. ❌ Risk of mispronunciation or mistranslation. | Bon Appétit, Café Luna, Amore Boutique |
| Sound & Rhythm | Relies on catchy phonetics (rhyme, alliteration). | ✅ Sticky, easy to recall, social-friendly. ❌ Can sound gimmicky if overdone. | Coca-Cola, TikTok, PayPal |
Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Business Name Ideas
It’s crucial to avoid common naming pitfalls that can hurt your brand in the long run. Pay attention to these mistakes to make sure your business name is both creative and effective.
- Too long or hard to spell: If customers can’t easily say or spell your name, they won’t be able to find you. Keep it simple and memorable.
- Too similar to existing businesses: Choosing a name that sounds like a competitor’s can lead to confusion and even a costly trademark infringement lawsuit. Always check for availability.
- Follow short-term trends: A name based on a current fad might seem clever now, but it can quickly make your brand feel dated and irrelevant in the future.
- Choose a limiting name: Avoid names that are too specific to a product or service. Your name should be flexible enough to allow your business to grow and evolve.
- Ignoring cultural meanings: A word that sounds innocent in one language could be offensive or negative in other cultures.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a catchy business name?
Catchy names often use alliteration, rhyme, or short, punchy words. A catchy name grabs attention and sticks in memory, which is especially valuable for small businesses and startups.
Can I change my business name later?
Yes, but it can be costly and confusing for customers. If possible, choose a flexible name from the start. For example, don’t name your store DVD World if you plan to sell streaming services in the future.
How to check if a business name is available?
You should:
Search your country’s trademark database.
Check domain name availability (ideally .com).
Verify social media handles.
Do a quick Google search to avoid conflicts with competitors.
Should I use a business name generator?
Yes, a business name generator can help brainstorm, but don’t rely on it completely. Generators may create names that are generic or already in use. Use them as a starting point, then refine your ideas to make them unique and legally available.
Don’t forget to choose business name generator from trusted source.
How long should a business name be?
The best business names are 1–3 words long. Short names are easier to remember, look better on logos, and are more flexible for growth
Should I include keywords in my business name?
Including keywords can help with SEO for small, local businesses. But for long-term branding, unique names often work better. A balance of clarity + creativity is ideal.
Should I use my own name for my business?
Using your name works well for personal brands and professional services. However, if you plan to sell the business or scale globally, a more neutral, brandable name may be better.
Can two businesses have the same name?
Technically yes, if they’re in different industries or countries and trademarks don’t conflict. But it’s risky. Customers may get confused, and trademark disputes can arise later. Always aim for a unique name to protect your brand.
How to brainstorm business name effectively?
Here’s some tips for effective brainstorming:
Write down every idea, even bad ones.
Use thesauruses, language tools, and translation apps for inspiration.
Explore industry metaphors, natural imagery, or emotional triggers.
Consider foreign words, symbolic references, and invented mashups.
