What 2,000+ Shopify App Store Reviews Say About Wholesale Needs

We analyzed 2,025 public Shopify App Store reviews of three wholesale apps. Of the 1,427 long enough to describe a need, 71.4% name none of six wholesale topics and talk about setup and support instead. When they do name one, it is access (11.5%) or pricing (11.4%) far more often than tax (2.8%) or quotes (2%).

The data: 2,025 reviews, three apps, 68 countries

Public reviews of BSS B2B Solution, BSS B2B Lock and BSS B2B Quote on the Shopify App Store, read on 2 October 2026. The average rating is 4.88 and 94.9% of reviews are five stars, so this is a read of satisfied customers and their needs, not a ranking of apps.

Pricing

Pricing is named in 163 reviews (11.4%). Most of it is about prices that differ by customer or customer group (71 reviews); volume or quantity-break pricing (21), price lists (10) and discount priorities (7) are named far less. It is mainly a Solution topic: 16.3% of Solution reviews, against 4.3% of Lock and 5% of Quote reviews.

Access and hidden prices

Access is named in 164 reviews (11.5%), and 30.9% of BSS B2B Lock reviews. Hiding prices (41 reviews) and passwords or passcodes (34) lead; hiding whole products, collections or pages (16) and locking the whole store (4) are rarer. It also has the second-highest rate of limit-or-wish phrasing among the six topics (15.9%).

Registration and onboarding

Registration and onboarding appear in 112 reviews (7.8%): registration or application forms (48), approving new buyers (25) and automatic customer tagging (22). Reviews that name it often describe one chain: a buyer applies, someone approves, and a tag decides what that buyer sees and pays.

Subtopic counts are independent mentions, so they do not add up to the topic total, and bars in each subtopic table are scaled to the longest bar in that table.

Most reviews are about support and setup, not features

88.8% of substantive reviews name support or service, and 40.4% name setup, theme code or customization. Only 28.6% name at least one of the six wholesale topics: 302 name one and 106 name two or more.

Two readings fit this. Reviewers may praise the people who got setup working because that is what they remember, or setup may be what holds merchants back. The data cannot separate the two, but it shows that configuration comes first, which is why the first step below is about setup. Reviews are also a weak instrument for feature gaps: only 7.8% of substantive reviews (111) include a limit or wish phrase, and 6.4% of the four and five star ones.

By region: tax leans European, access leans North American

Region is the store country shown on the review. Europe (excluding the UK) holds the most reviews, 38.5% (779), then the United States at 28.8% (584). The United Kingdom and Australia with New Zealand each hold 8.4%, Canada 5.1%. The largest single countries are United States (584), Germany (196), United Kingdom (171).

Source: same dataset. Region groups: United States; Europe (excluding the UK); United Kingdom; Australia and New Zealand; Canada; Rest of the world. Cells show share and review count.

Tax separates the regions most clearly. It is named in 5.4% of European reviews (95% interval 3.8 to 7.6%), 3.8% of UK reviews, 2.5% in Australia and New Zealand, 0.5% in the United States (0.1 to 1.7%) and 0% in Canada. Access shows the reverse pattern: 18.4% in Canada, 15.4% in the United States and 14.6% in the UK, against 7.6% in Europe.

Language could bias this, because our keywords are English. 13.1% of European substantive reviews look non-English by a simple test, so we repeated the count on English-language reviews only. European tax moves to 6% and the order of regions does not change.

Selling to both wholesale and retail buyers is named in 11.7% of Australian and New Zealand reviews (14 of 120) and 1.2% of US reviews. We cannot report business type. Only 4 of 1,427 substantive reviews name an industry such as coffee, beauty or furniture, so reviewers do not say what they sell.

By time on the app: access first, pricing later

Each review shows how long the reviewer had used the app. Reviewers in the first week write most about access; those in the one-to-six-month range write most about pricing.

Source: same dataset. Time on the app is taken from the review (2,022 of 2,025 reviews show it); minutes and hours count as day zero, months as 30 days and years as 365 days.

Tax peaks in the 8 to 30 day window at 4.3%, which fits a merchant who reaches tax rules during first setup. Setup or theme help is named most by the 8 to 30 day group (44.1%) and least by those past six months (35.4%). These are different reviewers at different moments, not the same stores followed over time, so treat the pattern as a prompt for sequencing a rollout and not as proof of one.

Where it breaks: 53 low-star reviews

53 of 2,025 reviews (2.6%) are three stars or fewer, 42 of them one star. 52 have text, and 49 of those are different texts, because the same review was sometimes posted on more than one app. We counted what they mention with tighter keyword rules, and read all of them to check. The counts overlap and rest on a small base, so they illustrate and do not rank.

  • Bugs or something not working: 22 of 52 (42.3%)
  • Billing, trial or plan price: 20 of 52 (38.5%)
  • Theme code, compatibility or leftover code: 12 of 52 (23.1%)
  • Slow or unhelpful support: 11 of 52 (21.2%)
  • Hard to set up or use: 10 of 52 (19.2%)

These are reviewers' statements and we have not verified them. Bugs and billing or trial complaints lead, followed by theme code or compatibility, slow or unhelpful support and difficulty of setup. Read them next to the 40.4% of substantive reviews that mention setup help: for a wholesale app that edits what a storefront shows, compatibility with the store's theme is the part to test before you commit.

What it means for merchants

If you are planning wholesale on Shopify, the reviews suggest an order of work. Each line links to the guide that covers it.

  1. Plan the first hour of setup

40.4% of reviews mention setup, theme or customization help. Test the app on your theme before you rely on it.

  2. Decide who sees prices

Access is named in 11.5% of reviews and rises to 30.9% for Lock. Settle the rule for guests first.

  3. Set prices by customer group

Customer-specific prices are the most named pricing need (71 reviews). Group buyers with tags and price them by group.

  4. Design the application and approval path

7.8% of reviews describe registration, approval and tagging as one chain.

  5. Check tax early if you sell in Europe

Tax is named in 5.4% of European reviews and carries the highest share of limits and wishes. Confirm display and exemption needs before launch.

  6. Add terms and ordering tools when buyers ask

Order rules (2.1%) and quotes or quick order (2%) are named far less often, and quotes mostly by reviewers of the Quote app.

BSS B2B Solution covers pricing, registration with approval, tax display and order rules; BSS B2B Lock and BSS B2B Quote add access control and quote or quick order pages.

Methodology

Dataset. Public reviews of three Shopify apps, read from the listings' public review pages on 2 October 2026, newest first, at no more than one request a second. 2,025 reviews: 1,185 for BSS B2B Solution (App Store listing "BSS B2B Wholesale Pricing"), 649 for BSS B2B Lock ("BSS B2B Lock, Login & Password") and 191 for BSS B2B Quote ("BSS B2B Request a Quote, Order"). Average rating 4.88, 4.88 and 4.87. Reviews of other apps, including competitors, are not in the data.

Dates and place. 1,812 reviews carry a parseable date, from 17 January 2020 to 30 September 2026; 213 do not and are left out of any date-based figure. Region is the store country shown on the review (68 countries; 3 reviews show none).

Base. 1,934 reviews have text. We count topics on the 1,427 with at least 120 characters, long enough to describe a need. Shorter reviews are mostly praise.

Classification. Keyword rules in English, one rule set per topic (pricing, access and hidden prices, registration and onboarding, tax and vat, order rules and payment terms, quotes and quick order), plus support and setup. Examples: access matches hide, lock, password, passcode and restrict; tax matches tax, VAT, exempt and GST; order rules match minimum order, increments, net terms and payment terms. A review can match several topics. App names are removed before matching. We read samples of matches for each rule and tightened rules that over-matched, and read all 52 low-star reviews. The rules are not a measure of sentiment.

Anonymization. Store names, reviewer names and review IDs were removed before analysis. The page reports counts and percentages only and quotes no review.

Intervals and sensitivity. Where shown, 95% intervals are Wilson intervals; they show noise only and do not make the sample representative. Repeating the topic counts on the 1,342 English-language substantive reviews moves no topic by more than 0.7 points. Counting each repeated text once moves none by more than 0.2 points and keeps the ranking.

Limitations

  • Selection. Reviewers are customers of three apps made by BSS Commerce, and 94.9% gave five stars. This is not a sample of all Shopify wholesale merchants, and we make the apps.
  • Mentions, not importance. A topic can matter and go unwritten. Reviews lean towards praising support, which understates feature needs.
  • Language. The rules are English. About 85 substantive reviews look non-English by a stop-word test, so topics in those are undercounted.
  • Repeats. 135 reviews (62 groups) repeat identical text across apps. They are counted as posted.
  • Small counts. Tax (40), order rules (30) and quotes (28) rest on few reviews; region and time cells are smaller still.
  • Snapshot. The data is a single pull from 2 October 2026 and is not updated automatically.

Shopify wholesale needs from app reviews: frequently asked questions

What did you analyze?

2,025 public reviews of three Shopify apps from BSS Commerce (BSS B2B Solution, BSS B2B Lock and BSS B2B Quote), collected from the Shopify App Store on 2 October 2026. 1,934 have written text and 1,427 have at least 120 characters, which is the base for the topic counts.

What do Shopify wholesale merchants ask for most?

Access control (11.5%) and pricing (11.4%) are named most, then onboarding (7.8%), tax (2.8%), order rules (2.1%) and quotes or quick order (2%). Most reviews, 71.4%, name none of these and talk about setup and support.

How did you classify the reviews?

With English keyword rules, one rule set per topic. A review can name several topics. App names such as "BSS B2B Quote" are removed before matching so that an app's name is not counted as a mention of its topic. The counts are mentions, not importance or satisfaction. See Methodology for the limits.

Are these reviews representative of all Shopify wholesale merchants?

No. They come from merchants who installed one of three apps made by BSS Commerce, and 94.9% of the reviews are five stars. They show what this group chose to write about, not the needs of every wholesale store. BSS Commerce makes the apps, so read the figures with that in mind.

Did you quote or identify any reviewer?

No. Store names, reviewer names and review IDs were removed before analysis. The page reports counts and percentages only and quotes no review text.
