Discount codes leak to everyone
Raven used discount codes for B2B clients, which complicated ordering. An open code also reaches retail shoppers.
Industry: furniture, tiles and home decor
A furniture, tile or home decor brand can sell to dealers, designers and contractors on its existing Shopify store by approving them through a trade registration form, tagging each group, and giving each its own price, quantity breaks and order limits. Shopify's native B2B covers companies, catalogs and payment terms. BSS B2B Solution adds tag-based pricing, quantity or amount breaks, order limits and trade applications, and BSS B2B Quote adds request for quote for project-size orders. Mesa Well, Raven and Walston Architectural Products run this kind of setup.
Mesa Well makes bespoke furniture, Raven supplies Japanese tiles to business clients, and Walston Architectural Products serves interior designers, architects, hospitality venues and commercial projects.
| Model | What buyers expect | What you set up |
|---|---|---|
| Maker to dealers and retailers | Dealer prices, breaks by quantity or order value, minimums. | Registration form, dealer tag, Custom Pricing, Volume Pricing, Order Limits. |
| Tile and surface supplier to trade | A visible discount per product and samples they can order. | Quantity breaks on main and sample products, trade registration. |
| Trade program for designers and architects | A simple way to join and a trade price afterwards. | Registration form built as a trade program form, tags, Custom Pricing. |
| Hospitality and commercial projects | A quote for the whole project, not a cart. | Request for quote with the price hidden, proposals, approval to draft order. |
These problems come up again and again. Each maps to a setup further down.
Raven used discount codes for B2B clients, which complicated ordering. An open code also reaches retail shoppers.
Raven's B2B clients could not place orders through the website, a barrier to sales.
Walston replaced a manual effort with a form, and 203 trade program forms were filled out.
Quantity breaks must show on both, and the cart must update when a sample is added.
A single order can be big, so minimums matter and price should not be public for custom pieces.

Five jobs cover most furniture, tile and decor trade stores.
Give each group a customer tag, such as dealer, designer and contractor. A Custom Pricing rule then sets a percentage off, an amount off or a fixed price for that tag, on all products or selected collections. Mesa Well asked to personalize pricing for specific customers or groups, and uses Custom Pricing for it.
Mesa Well also uses Discount Codes. A Discount Code rule can be limited to a customer tag, so a dealer code does not work for retail shoppers. See furniture trade pricing and order limits and show MSRP beside the wholesale price.

Volume Pricing lets bigger quantities or bigger order amounts earn a better price, per product, collection or whole order, and shows a table on the product page. Mesa Well chose quantity and amount breaks for its B2B customers. Breaks stack on the account price. See tiered and quantity break pricing.
Raven replaced discount codes with quantity breaks shown on product pages, for main products and sample products. Its tech support team worked through two technical points: showing the breaks on sample products and updating the cart drawer when a sample is added. Test both on your theme.

Walston customized its registration form so it doubles as a trade program form on a specific page. It reports a 150% increase in customer registration forms, 203 trade program forms filled out in total, and an automated process in place of a manual one. Mesa Well had BSS restyle its form and change the Reply-to email so replies go to the right sender.
A longer application can run as a multi-step form with a tax ID field and a document upload of up to 10 MB per file. Review each application before you approve it.

Mesa Well wanted to limit purchases by quantity or order amount. Order Limits set a minimum or maximum quantity or amount for a tag, and Quantity Increments sell in boxes or sets. Both need the Advanced plan, run on storefront scripts and are checked in the cart, so a direct checkout link can bypass them.
For samples, make the sample its own product and cap it with an Order Limits maximum. Manual Orders does not apply Order Limits. See enforce minimum order quantity and value.

Walston names commercial and hospitality clients, and project-size orders are usually quoted rather than bought from a cart, though its story does not mention quotes. BSS B2B Quote adds an Add to quote button where the price and cart buttons were, a quote form, and proposals you edit and send. A logged-in buyer who approves by email gets a draft order and an invoice.
See request a quote and hide the price. Reorder and Quick Order help dealers who restock.
Selling large or custom pieces? BSS B2B Quote adds a quote button and form, with a free plan.
The numbers are illustrative, not results from a real store. A tile supplier sells a box at a retail price of 60.00.
| Buyer group | Tag | Price they see | Order rules | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Homeowner | None | 60.00 per box | None | Public store |
| Designer | designer | 15% off: 51.00 per box | Samples capped at 2 | Trade prices after approval |
| Dealer | dealer | 30% off: 42.00, then 39.90 from 10 boxes (5%) and 37.80 from 50 (10%) | Minimum order amount of 500.00 | Dealer code, trade prices after approval |
| Project buyer | project | Price hidden, Add to quote | Proposal, then draft order on approval | Quote form |
Custom Pricing prices the designer and the dealer, and Volume Pricing adds the breaks on the dealer price: 5% off 42.00 is 39.90 and 10% off is 37.80. Order Limits hold the minimum and the sample cap. Test as each buyer.
